Reporting an error

The most useful report names the page, quotes the sentence or figure at issue, and says what you think is wrong with it. If it is a rule that has changed, a pointer to where the current rule is published helps most of all. Confirmed errors are corrected on the page and the page's updated date changes, as the editorial policy describes.

A report that can be acted on quickly usually has four parts:

• The address of the page, or its title.
• The exact sentence, number or table row you think is wrong, copied in full.
• What you believe is correct, and why.
• Where the correct version is published, if it comes from a rule, a filing or an IRS publication.

Reports about broken links, pages that display badly on a particular device, or a worksheet giving a result that looks wrong are just as welcome. For the worksheets, include the numbers you entered, since the working shown under each result makes the problem easy to trace.

Suggesting a question

If your broker did something the questions section does not cover, describe what happened in general terms: the order type, what you expected and what you got. Leave out account numbers and anything else that identifies your account. Suggestions shape what gets written next.

Account problems and advice

For a problem with your own account, your broker's support desk has the records and can act on them. Questions about whether to buy or sell something, or about your own tax position, need a licensed adviser or a tax professional; the risk disclaimer explains why. Questions about data and privacy are covered in the privacy policy, and are welcome by email too.
